Old Masters, 19th and 20th Century Art

Lou Foerster

Granite Quarry

Other than the facts that Lou Foerster lived in Arizona in the mid twentieth century and actively exhibited with art associations in Phoenix and Scottsdale, often winning awards for the work and receiving high praise from the critics, we know little about him; but we love this painting. One notice in the Arizona Republic regarding a work he had on exhibit goes "No work in the show can surpass the dramatic qualities of Lou Foerster's Storm Over Jerome.  The painter has pulled out all the stops, especially in that sky."

We agree.  It is no small feat for an abstract artist to create such a powerful effect as he has done here with nothing but line and color.  Lou Foerster has truly created drama on this little piece of board.
