Gechtoff with his wife Etya in their Philadelphia home
Russian born Leonid Gechtoff studied painting in his native land before he and his parents fled the Revolution when he was in his twenties. He subsequently lived in Egypt, Holland, Indonesia and the Philippines before moving to the United States in 1921 where he settled in Philadelphia and summered at the Jersey shore, primarily in Cape May. He enjoyed commercial and critical success as a painter and was given a solo show at the Philadelphia Art Alliance in the early 1930's. He was a life-long friend of artist and fellow Russian David Burliuk.
