Gerrit Van Sinclair

Sinclair was born in Grand Haven, Michigan in 1890.  He studied under John Vanderpoel at the Art Institute of Chicago.  In his late 20's he enlisted in The Army Ambulance Corps and served in Europe during the First World War.  Many of his paintings documented his wartime experiences.  He later settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he served on the faculty of the Layton School of Art until the 1950's.  He is well known for his paintings of the Milwaukee area.  He exhibited widely at important museums and galleries around the country and at the salons in Paris, and received many commissions including a WPA sponsored mural in the Federal Building in Wassau, Wisconson.
